Maplewood Deli & Coffeehouse

Sunday morning, I found myself in search of a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit. Not a croissant, not an English muffin, a biscuit. A damn good biscuit, too. Fast food joints aren’t quite my thing. A restaurant simply couldn't come to mind. Probably due to a lack of coffee. I decided to grab my keys and look for coffee instead. While I was driving around, I came across Maplewood Deli and Coffeehouse. I pulled my car over and looked at their menu. Didn’t see sausage, egg and cheese biscuit on their menu, but I noticed they had all the ingredients, as well as coffee. I decided to give them a try.

The first thing I noticed were the patio tables located outside overlooking the intersection of Manchester & Marshall. As the temperatures are cooling down, sitting at a patio table was perfect. Once inside I noticed a cozy, welcoming coffeehouse. Lots of plants, dog-friendly, bright natural lighting. This place is dripping with positive vibes.

Immediately after I also noticed there was a “Pay It Forward” board. Apparently, people can pay for coffee and/or food ahead of time for another guest. When in need of a pick-me up to their day, a guest can snag one of the prepaid items listed on a Post-It note from the board and redeem it at the register. This along with other attributes such as their unique Wi-Fi password show Maplewood Deli and Coffeehouse values gratitude as well as their community.

Back to that biscuit. Again, there wasn’t a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit on the menu. However, the weekend brunch menu listed a Hot Honey Biscuits entrée. The entrée included biscuits, bacon, sausage, white cheddar, pickles, and of course hot honey. I opted to have eggs added for an upcharge and they happily obliged.

Upon receiving my food, I noticed I was given two full breakfast sandwiches. While the menu did state there were two biscuits included, my original thought of the menu description would be a scramble or skillet of sorts. To see that sausage, egg, and cheese presented to me just as I had imagined was truly the highlight.

The biscuit was dense, yet fluffy and delicate. Easily breaking apart with each bite. I was given a decent amount of bacon. I could tell the sausage wasn’t a previously frozen patty from a big box grocer. It had the perfect amount of breakfast sausage “spice” that didn’t compete with the hot honey. The hot honey wasn’t as hot as others I have tried in the past and it added a nice touch instead of the traditional jelly that most would opt for. I decided to remove the pickles, but the remnants of pickle flavor left on the sandwich did not interfere with the overall experience I was looking for. Pickles on a breakfast sandwich might not be a bad idea after all.

Maplewood Deli and Coffeehouse is a great pet-friendly, vibrant, positive coffeehouse I would surely visit again. With a community first attitude, this is a local business I wouldn’t mind supporting over and over again.
